Charles Dion Bicknell, as told to the CEN by Alec Clark-Kennedy, bursar of Corpus Christi College:
Bicknell was the first of the tourist guides. He look like a tourist’s idea of a don. he was taken on here in 1922 out of charity to look after the Lewis Collection of Classical Antiquities. he was an Old Persean, who was taught by Dr Rouse, and a graduate of St Catherine’s, where he read classical archaeology. he always wore a pair of grey, stained slacks, no socks, and old brown tween coat, a button down pullover underneath with a neck tie of a creton material cut out of old curtains. He sported a silver topped black cane.
He died in 1958 (according to CEN) aged 68.
