In 1881 Michael Hutcheson Bull, a 46-year-old carpenter who was born in Bury St Edmunds on the 24th of February 1835, lives here with his wife Elizabeth and their family. Michael married Elizabeth Levett in Bury in 1859.
Michael is the brother of Benjamin Bull who lived at 54 Sturton Street until his death in 1890.
He is listed on the 1871 Census as living on Sturton Street, however the street is unnumbered on that Census. Cottages are recorded by name and the Hutcheson’s appear to live near to Haylock Cottages (151 – 157 Sturton Street).
Elizabeth is a dressmaker as is their 18-year-old daughter Sarah Elizabeth. Sarah was born in Drinkstone, Suffolk. Their son Frederic, 13, was born in Bury. The youngest children were born in Cambridge. Susannah is 12, Eliza Martha is 8 and Annie is 5. Elizabeth’s sister, Sarah Levett, is visiting at the time of the 1881 Census.
Michael and Elizabeth have two older sons. Harry, who is now a baker and lodging in Kensington, and Charles who is a bakehouse assistant and lodging in St Stephen’s, London. Their daughter Mary is working as a sewing maid in the household of Henry John Hales Bond, retired physician, living at 4 Regent Street, Cambridge.
Elizabeth died in 1884.
Between 1891 and 1911 Sarah is living on Eden Street. with her son Walter George Bull. At first she also lives wth her sister Annie, both women are dressmakers, and then, in 1901, with her niece Frances. By 1911 her niece Beatrice Fletcher is living with them. Sarah died in 1943.
By 1891 Susannah is living alone in Windsor, she’s a dressmaker. In 1901 she is living with her sister Mary, also a dressmaker, in Paddington. Susannah married widower Edwin Walker in 1904 and they have two sons. She died in New South Wales in 1943.
Frederick married Ellen Tibble in 1889 when he was 21. Harry and Susannah were witnesses. Frederick was a carpenter like his father.
Annie married Arthur Middleton Hoppett in 1897. He was an organist and music teacher. They didn’t have any children. Annie remained in Cambridge and was living at 76 King Street when she died in June 1938. Arthur and Annie are buried in Mill Road Cemetery.
It is uncertain what happened to Eliza. There is an “Eliza M Bell” aged 19 from Cambridge, working as a Servant in Ealing. Many of her siblings ended up in London, so this is a possibility.
By 1901 Michael is living alone at 117 Sturton Street. His niece, Agnes Bull, is living next door at 115. He has moved to 115 Sturton Street by 1911.
There is nobody at this property in 1911.
