2 Stone Street, Cambridge

History of 2 Stone Street

Number 2  is one of a terrace of 8 houses on the south side of Stone Street.

1881 – 1887

Head of household is David Salisbury, a 30-year-old engine fireman for the Great Eastern Railway, born in Chesterton.  He is married to Eliza (nee Payton) and they have six young children. Elizabeth Caroline (10), Jane Rebecca (9), Mary Ann (7), Mercy Ann (5), Ada Matilda (2) and David Henry (1).  The older children are all scholars.  There is some confusion on the 1881 Census recording the names of Mary Anne and Mercy, however, the birth records show the correct names.

In December 1882 David is summoned for neglecting to send his children to school.  He was represented by his wife Eliza who said that she needed the elder children at home to look after the younger ones.  She herself went out to work as well as her husband to support the large family.  An order for attendance was made.

School registers show that at least Ada, Jane and Mercy attended East Road Girls School.

Another attendance order was made in 1888.

On Friday 24th February David had an accident on the railway. The newspaper reports that “…he was walking on the foot-plate of his engine, which was entering the engine shed, when, owing to the breadth of the portion of the locomotive upon which he was standing he was severely crushed by one of the buttresses.” It goes on to say that “a medical examination showed that several of his ribs had been fractured” Cambridge Independent Press: 2 March 1888

The electoral register shows David at this property until 1887 at least, they have moved to number 16 Stone Street by 1891.
