9 Stone Street, Cambridge

A Cab Driver and his family

Number 9 was one of a terrace of seven houses on the south side of Stone Street and was built in 1881.  The terrace was demolished, so this property no longer exists.

1891 – 1901

1891

William Kimmins, 40, cab driver, b Fordham

Sarah Pyle was living at 65 Russell Street in 1871.

Head of household is William Kimmins, a 40-year old cab driver and groom, from Fordham, Cambridgeshire.  He is married to Sarah, 47, who is from Great Shelford.

They have four children, all of whom were born in Cambridge.  Amelia Pyke Kimmins, 13, Rose, 8, Grace, 8, and William aged 3.  On the 1891 Census children are usually recorded as “scholars”, but none of these children are, perhaps they weren’t registered.

The family is still here in 1901.

In 1881 the Kimmons family were at 65 Russell Street.

1908 – 1933

Head of household is Walter Salisbury.  He grew up on Stone Street and was living at number 17 with his parents and younger siblings in 1901.

Walter married Ellen Louisa Law in 1905.  Ellen grew up at number 14 Stone Street. They have three children, Dorothy May (5), Beatrice Eva (3) and Reginald Charles William (1).  Walter is a fireman on the railway.

Electoral registers show that Walter lived here from 1908 until his death in 1933.
