Eden Street

History of Eden Street

In the early C19 the area was full of market gardens and was known as the Garden of Eden.

Jesus College was awarded the land in the Barnwell Enclosure award of 1809. In 1822 Eden Street was known as Gravel Close. the first houses were built 1833-4 and land was leased out to developers. One of the first was Barretts, the china dealers. The early leases were for 40 years and most had reverted to the college by 1900. The west side of the street was known as Love Lane.
