The History of 1 York Terrace

This property first appears on the 1891 Census as “opposite York Terrace” and on the 1901 – 1921 Censuses as number 1a.

1891 (opp. York Terrace)

This family have moved here from 36 Ainsworth Street.

Head of household in 1891 is Andrew Bareford, a 36-year-old railway engine fireman who was born in Swaffham.  He has been married to Ellen Elizabeth (nee Franklin) since 1876 and the couple have six children. The eldest, Florence Ellen, is 14 and was born in Swaffham.  Charles Frederick (12), Frederick (9), Emily Mabel (7), George Andrew (5) and Alice May (2), were all born in Cambridge.

No record can be found of Frederick after this census, so he may have died before 1901.

By 1896 the family has moved next door to what is now 3 York Terrace but was then known as number 2a.

Joseph and Hester have been married for 9 years and have three children.  By 1921 the family has moved to Letchworth.

Louisa Thurgood, 33, widowed, born in the Parish of St. Andrew the Less, Factory Hand at Chivers & Sons Ltd. Histon
Edward Summerlin, 26, Louisa’s brother, born in the Parish of St. Andrew the Less, hardware shop assistant for Sturton & Sons Ltd. of Fitzroy Street (out of work).
Gertrude Pink, 26, boarder, born in the Parish of St. Matthew’s, Factory Hand at Chivers & Sons Ltd. Histon

Louisa married Albert Edward Victor Thurgood on the 28th April 1912, he was a cook.  Albert died in the ‘third quarter’ of 1912, which means July, August or September of that year.
