Mrs Bell née Archer grew up at this address. Her father was a painter and decorator. She went to St Philip’s Girls’ School in Catherine Street and then was apprenticed to George Stoakley bookbinder in Green Street. She worked there until WWII then had to go to the factories. She went to brush factory in St Albans.
Her father would earn 35s a week; a ceiling was 2s 6d and papering a room was 5s. He kept pigs on the allotments, up to 100. He would sell them to the local butcher.
