225 and 227 High Street (155 & 157), British Queen, Chesterton

History of 225 and 227 High Street

Royal Commission Survey of Cambridge 1959:  house, now two tenements, nos 225, 227 High Street …. alls of rendered brickwork, presumably encasing timber framing, and tile covered roofs. It was built probably in the 17th cent., comprising a range with a lower cross wing at the SW end, and latter projecting only a short way beyond the main frontage, further at the back….. no 225 is derelict (1952).

1962 neither listed

Images of England – Chesterton – by the Chesterton Local History Group – notes that the picture shows the High Street looking towards Green End Road in the early 1920s. The building on the left is the British Queen public house. It was demolished in the 1950s and the ground used for temporary classrooms for the nearby St Andrew’s School. However, listings of the British Queen seem illusive at present.

The private house from 229 to 243 have survived however.
