In 2025 MC sent this note:
I went too Milton Road Infants and Junior school starting about 1939-40 during the war years. I can remember the head of the infants was Miss Shrive. We had a teacher, Miss Buchanan? When there an air raid we had to walk with gas masks out the back door past the garden patch, along where the back of what was Cambridge Town football stand, to the Chesterton senior school shelters. Very often the all clear went and we walked back. If we stayed in the shelter we were given a barley sugar sweet (the only sweet I had in the war.) The head of the Junior school was a Mr. Varley who grew chrysanthemums; the head taught me to split and dis-bud them to grow prize winning flowers. Also I had to draw a plan of the plants with the names. One morning we went to a class room for a “test”; when we finished we were told you have just taken the 11-plus, no hype as in today’s schools.
