The Fox, Burwell (RGL2024)Listed Building
Inn, late C16, or early C17. Gable end room to west, of original three unit plan rebuilt in C18 and in mid C19. … The Fox was first recorded as an ale house in 1764.
The Fox illustrates the central role of the village pub in rural community life. Inns such as The Fox were not simply places for drinking, but important social centres where local people met, exchanged news, arranged work, held celebrations, and maintained community relationships. In agricultural villages especially, pubs often acted as informal meeting places for labourers, tradesmen, farmers, and travellers, helping to sustain the social fabric of rural communities across generations.
