Downham Hythe
History of Downham Hythe
In 1398 a hermitage was recorded at Downham Hythe, and important landing point on the edge of a major promontory into the fen. The hermits seem to have earned a living by providing a ferry service across the Mere to Doddington. In 1398 the hermits lived together under a warden, John Skillinge.
