Destination Unknown is the apparently anonymised account of the experiences of two London evacuees, Margaret Saywell and and her sister Mary, as they get passed from household to household until they find a welcoming family to stay with in first Littleport and then Ely in World War Two.

The Johnsons are the family with whom they finally come to lodge, in their house facing on to playing fields and the cathedral. Walter had the use of a car in wartime because of his job visiting farms in the countryside to maintain their equipment.

Grandma was Rachel, Bess’s mother. Walter’s younger brother William also lived there. The two girls spent three years living at Barton Road.
