Sundial House was named after its ancient sundial with a Greek inscription. When the Baptist chapel was built it was a condition of sale that the sundial should be preserved and it was placed on the south side of the chapel.
The corner shop was occupied by Mae Bettell, shoemaker; his shoes cost 12s. The house facing the green was occupied by the greengrocer, E Brooks. The tall chimney belonged to a steam-driven corn mill.
