History of New Common Bridge

Brown’s Stores was a family business set in the 1830s. In the 20th century, the owner, Bernard Brown, told of his great-grandfather losing a leg in a tramway accident outside the shop, and how in the 1940s pill-boxes and anti-tank barricades – dragon’s teeth – were used to defend the bridge against possible invasion.
