How To Use
You can explore the website in various ways – by using the map, the project areas, street and information tiles or the search box.
Using the Map
- zoom in and out by clicking on the + and – buttons at the bottom right of the map
- hover over a coloured dot to see the title of the article, click on the dot to see the featured image, click on the image or title to go to the full article
- to close the pop-up image, click on the coloured dot again or on the cross in the top right corner of the image
Historic background maps
In the bottom left of the map there is a selector which allows you to see the map as a historical OS map from 1901 or 1937 as well as the modern map and satellite map. The historical maps are provided by the National Library of Scotland and do not have the same resolution as the main map so may vanish if you zoom in to the maximum extent.
Filter Control
If you open the Info box in the top left then you can control what is shown on the map.
- You can show the dots for articles relating to the current project or sub-project or all dots or none.
- You can overlay data from external sources from the dropdown menu.
Once you’ve added a data overlay then it will stay shown until you disable it (with the checkbox) or remove it (with the cross symbol).
Some articles contain a data overlay specific to that article and will automatically enable it when the article is viewed. The overlay can be disabled in the same way but will also be removed when a different article is viewed.
Dot colours
The colour of the dot indicates the kind of content in the article.
- BLUE – a PDF document
- ORANGE – video or audio files
- RED – a featured image
- GREEN – only text
Hiding the info panel
You can hide and show the info panel at any time by clicking on the handle on its edge so that you can see the whole map. The info panel will reappear whenever a new article is viewed.
