39 Owlstone Road, Newnham

History of 39 Owlstone Road

1921

Maurice Charles Scudamore, 42, boat builder, b Cambridge

Alice, 34, b Chesterford

Basil Maurice, 13, b Chesterford

Eric Percy, 6, b Chesterford

In 1921 Maurice’s parents were living at 13 St John’s Road.

Maurice who later became known as ‘Jack’ is well recognised as the founder of Scudamore punts in around 1910. However as early as 1908 there was a case brought against Arthur who was charged with obstructing the river by building a launch at the Mill Lane access point where a punt was moored.

The history of punting in Cambridge and its significance in the landscape and city life cannot be underestimated. Maurice is registered at 15a Mill Lane 1908-1915 and subsequently at 18 Mill Lane 1918-1937 though his abode during that time is in 39 Owlstone Street.
