Three cruisers of the British Fleet—HMS Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy—have been torpedoed and sunk by German submarines. Cambridge men were serving aboard all three vessels. Among them was Naval Reservist J.L. Claydon of 6 Benson Street, Cambridge, who was aboard HMS Hogue. Other local servicemen included Midshipman C.A.G. Cooke of Bridge Street, who was saved after spending three-quarters of an hour in the water; Petty Officer Percy James Warrington of Union Road, reported safe; Signalman John Toombs of East Road; and Naval Reservist O. Hinson of Garden Walk. 14 09 25
