Crowland Bridge, date unknown

T A Bevis A Letter from the Fens:

This curious bridge replaces an earlier structure in wood mentioned in AD943. Present structure dates between 1360 and 1390. Formerly the river Welland divided into two streams at this point. The stone figure is supposed to represent Christ holding a loaf of bread, but it may well be that of a saint which formerly adorned the Abbey’s west front.
