Cambridge Daily News, 28th March: WANTED, healthy CAT, which has just kittened, as Foster Mother; 5s. for use of same.—Apply, with Cat and kittens, SHERLOCK, 42, Lyndewode-road, Cambridge.

This is a fascinating glimpse into late Victorian pet care. The advertiser was evidently trying to save orphaned or abandoned kittens by finding a nursing queen (female cat) that had recently given birth and could suckle additional kittens. The instruction to bring “cat and kittens” suggests the foster mother’s own litter was expected to accompany her, making it easier for her to accept the newcomers. Five shillings (a substantial sum in 1899) would have been an incentive for the owner to lend the cat for this purpose.
