History of Young Street, Albert Street
History of Young Street and Albert Street
The numeration of this street is particularly complex. The map shows the most probable historical numbering schemes.
Albert / Young Street numbering schemes (overlaid on 1901 OS map)
1901: The houses later numbered 52-78 had not been built. the south side has even numbers from 8 to 36 and the north side has odd from 1 to 31.
1911: in the census the street is called ‘Albert Street New Street’. The old houses on south side have been renumbered from 18 to 50 and the new houses run from 52-78.
The street is called Young Street and the numbering is modern. There is a note which says ‘Late Albert Street, New Street.’ It seems that the street went through a phase when it was still called ‘Albert’ but with the addition of ‘New’, before it was decided to adopt ‘Young’.
