RAF Castle Camps

History of RAF Castle Camps

Built in 1939 castle Camps was a satellite to RAF Debden. There were initially no permanent structures, only tents. In Sept 1940 Hurricanes of 73 Squadron operated from here. In 1941 the runways were given tarmac. Mosquitos operated from here from 1942 until 1944 when Spitfires, Typhoons and Tempests appeared.

The Canadian 410 Squadron operated Mosquitos from April 1944. The station was closed in 1946.
