Lantern Cottage is believe to have been the Guildhall. Kathleen Fowle, Coton Through the Ages, writes that in 1361 there was a guild of St Peter at the church. In 1481 there were guilds for St Helen and St Catharine. The latter guild had a Guildhall. The guilds were suppressed in 1547. The building was later used mainly for housing the poor. After the plague four families from Whitwell were moved to the Guildhall.
Arthur Melbourne-Cooper, British film industry pioneer, lived here.
