History of the Plough

1571

1801 – 1850s Richard Scott, landlord

Richard Scott’s daughter, Lydia, married Henry Edwards of Coton in 1822. Janet Hurst writes about this family in detail in Coton through the Ages ed. by Kathleen Fowle. Both Henry and Lydia died in 1844 within a fortnight of each other leaving seven children. The children were taken in by their grandfather Richard Scott at The Plough.

After Richard Scott died the tenancy of the Plough pass to parker german, not from Coton, though he had married Susan, who was local.

1858 Coprolite was discovered in the field adjacent to the inn. Richard Ford was granted a lease to excavate the coprolite subject to Parker german receiving 1s 6d per ton. Coprolite continued to be dug until 1878.
