Ditton Plough From River 1920 (Cambridgeshire Collection)

The Plough, Fen Ditton

History of the Plough

1905

The Plough Fen Ditton, postcard commemorating drowning of three girls in 1905.

After the May Bumps in 1905 there was a fatal accident on the Ditton Ferry. The ‘Red Grind’ operated by James Skinner with Henry Clayton , the conductor, had already made two trips after the last race on 10th June. On the third thrip the boat had already left the shore with 22 passengers on board. Two University men jumped on board from three yards out and the ferry lurched breaking the chain. Three local girls who fell overboard were drowned.
