In ‘The Life and Times of Hinxton,’ Virgina Walker, 2000, it is recounted how Ernest saw his first ever car at Hinxton Hall in 1903. His father, John, had started work on a farm at the age of 10; he was also a member of the village Fire Brigade and a Special Constable for which he was paid £1 a year.
