History of 50 & 52 High Street, Hinxton

Listed Building

HINXTON HIGH STREET (East Side) 20/181 Nos. 50 and 52 22.11.67 (formerly listed as Nos 23, 24 and 25) GV II House now two dwellings. Late C16 or early C17 with later alterations and additions.

No 50 High Street demonstrates the development of architectural styles. The front of the house was built of oak with a first floor jetty in the early 16th cent. The massive brick chimney was possibly used for smoking and preserving. The house was refitted in the 1800s when rooms were divided and glass windows inserted.

Victor Ward and his wife Lil lived here between 1926 an 1993. The rent was 15 guineas per annum, payable on Lady Day and Michaelmas. In 1984, Mr Ward told his new landlord ‘ I won’t ask for any improvements and you don’t put up the rent.’
