Little Shelford recreation ground and allotments, Garden Fields

History of Garden Fields

According Fanny Wale in  Shelford Parva, village people would say that they were ‘Going Up The May Pole’ when they passed the gates at the beginning of Garden Fields because the village recreation grounds were there. In 1880 Col R G Wale made the first allotmwnt gardens here.

W Marshall bought a portion of the garden-fields and built eight cottages in groups of four in a row along the cart road behind the blacksmith’s forge.
