In 1881 the head of the household isn’t at home with his family. James Conquest, 55, works as a bailiff to the local Sheriff. On the night of the census he is staying at Wimpole Hall!
At 76 Sturton Street is James’ wife Sarah (nee Stratton) and four of their children. Alfred James is 22 and John (Walter John) is 20, they both work as a college servants. Julia is 18 and George Frederick is 13.
In 1871 the family was living at The Osborne Arms on Hills Road. Previously numbered 42, the modern numbering is 108. James was a licensed victualler.
John married Catherine Mary Kitchener in 1882. The couple live at 6 Tennis Court Terrace and he continues to work as college servant.
By 1891 James is working as a hay and straw dealer and his son Alfred, now 37, is a Bailiff for the City Court. Julia is also living at home.
George married Emma Florence Davey in 1892. They live at 109 Cavendish Road and he works for the Great Eastern Railway.
The family have moved to Jesus Lane by 1901. James is working as a Bailiff once more alongside his son Alfred who is still living with his parents. Julia is living there in 1911 as James’ housekeeper.
