George Smith was a carpenter, as was his neighbour at no. 79. The 1886 Ordnance Survey map of the area and the trade directories show that the Kerridge timber yard and construction company on Sturton Street occupied the the plot behind both houses, so they may have worked there.

George Smith was looking after his teenage nephews, William and Cecil. By 1901 they had moved to 19 Hooper Street, where their aunt Hephzibah, George’s sister, joined them as their housekeeper.
