The Bartholomews & The Pates

1881

Head of Household is William Bartholomew, a 32 year old turf agent who was born in Newmarket.  He is married to Elizabeth, 26, who was born in Cambridge. The couple are living with William’s cousin, 20 year old mantle maker from Cambridge.  The census enumerator has recorded her name simply as “A Reynolds”.

1891

In 1891, 31 Kingston Street remains home to William and Elizabeth Bartholomew. 43 Year old William is listed as ‘living on his own means’. Also living there is their 10 year old niece, Lizzie Summerton, and a servant, 16 year old Alice Bigmore.

1901

By 1901, 31 Kingston Street is home to the Pate family. Gibbs Pate, an 81 year old from Harlton, ‘living on his own means’, is married to Ellen Pate, a 78 year old from Hilgay in Norfolk. They live with their son, Samuel Pate, a 39 year old Navy Pensioner, and their daughter, 46 year old Widow Rebecca Wallder, a dressmaker, and her daughter Mary Wallder, an 11 year old born in Australia, suggesting they have returned from overseas after the death of her husband.

Gibbs and his family lived from 1880 to 1897 at 63 Ainsworth Street.

1911

By 1911, 31 Kingston Street is home to Rebecca Wallder, a 56 year old Widow and dressmaker, living with her daughter Rebecca. Rebecca is 21, also a dressmaker, with her birthplace listed as Melbourne, Australia.
