John Fleetwood Baker, Baron Baker, Professor of Mechanical Sciences and Head of Department at the Cambridge University Department of Engineering. He applied the plastic theory of structures to the design of the Morrison shelter used in the blitz to protect people from collapsing buildings.

In 1939 this was the home of William Hartree, researcher in Atomic Physics, his wife Eva, Stella Woolley, private secretary, and Ida Coblenz, domestic help.

Eva was an air raid warden and organiser of a first post. She was also involved in the resettlement of Jewish refugee children, as recounted by Will who came from Austria in 1939 and attended school at the Perse.

Eva Hartree was mayor of Cambridge 1924-25.
