The CDN described the condition of a cottage in the Grip in 1908:
It was very old and dangerous, the front room was only four feet nine inches high and the floor had sunk several inches since August. But where were the occupants to Go? There are no empty cottages to be had and people could not be turned out into the road.
The cottage called Cats Castle was closed in January 1912 and the occupant, widow Mary Reader, evicted. It collapsed in 1913 after a hailstorm of exceptional severity hit the village. Windows were smashed by the hailstones and the streets for a time presented the unique spectacle of a flood being covered at the same time covered to a depth of several inches with hailstones of abnormal size.
