Ireton’s Way, linking Mepal and Chatteris, was constructed during the Civil War. By 1900 it was a private road in a dilapidated condition. The road was taken over in 1902 and the tolls removed. In 1922 the bridge over the New Bedford River was declared unfit to take modern traffic.Believed to be the last wooden Dutch type of bridge of its type in England, it was replaced with a new concrete structure shown in the rear of the picture.
