(As report in ‘Memories of Abbey and East Barnwell’) Ditton Fields Nursery School was built as day nursery for mothers who were involved in war work during the Second World War. The nursery is housed in an old Horsa building. The premises were taken over by the Education Authority in 1946. In July 1947 alterations were carried out at the school to provide a paddling pool and sand pit, and the old air raid shelter was converted.
