Illustrated Police news 15/11/1879:
CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER.
At the Cambridge Assizes on Saturday Robert Henry James, aged twenty-nine, a repulsive-looking man, a labourer, was charged with the manslaughter of an old woman named Mary McIntyre, at Cambridge, on September 27th. It appeared from the evidence which was elicited that prisoner caused a disturbance with the son of Mrs. McIntyre, and being very much enraged, he tried to force the latch of the door of Mrs. McIntyre’s house. The latch gave way, and the door flew open, knocking down the poor old woman, who was evidently shaken and hurt. She was put to bed and medical attendance called. Five weeks afterwards she died at the workhouse infirmary, where she had been sent, and the post-mortem examination showed that her death, from bronchitis, was accelerated by the injuries she had received as described above. The jury found the prisoner guilty and his lordship sentenced him to twelve months’ imprisonment.
