149 York Street

The Family of Harriet Smith

1901

Harriet Smith, a 41 year old dressmaker lives here with her daughter Kathleen, 14.  Harriet was born in Mildenhall and Kathleen in Ipswich.  Harriet is recorded as married, so her husband might be away from home on census night.

However, on the 1911 Census, Harriet and Kathleen are living at 101 York Street, still alone.  Harriet records there that she is has been married 34 years and has four children.  The husband might be a travelling samesman, or in the military, although it is also possible that he doesn’t exist.
