During WWII Frederick served with the Anti Aircraft Home Guard. One of the weapons he manned was the 3-inch projector Rocket on Coldhams Common.

This rocket launcher was officially known as a mobile Z battery. They were not especially effective and were given to the Home Guard. Whilst the oldest age for operating anti-aircraft guns was 40 because of the weight of the ammunition, those up to 60 were allowed to operate the rocket launchers.
