1830 John Ivatt founded a brick works at the bottom of the lane hence the local name Brickle Lane.
The twelve terraced cottages here cost £660 in 1865 when John Ivatt built them. (See Cottenham in Focus, 2002). They were two up, two down with a toilet at the bottom of the garden. A water tap was installed on the High Street at the top of the lane in 1903.
