Church Hill (Males Close), Cottenham

History of Church Hill

According to Cottenham in Focus, 2002, a local legend says that when a Saxon lord wanted to build a church on this site, the Devil would come at night and move the stones down to the end of the village. Eventually the local people conceded defeat and the church was built on its present site. Archaeologists believe that the legend may hold some truth and that there was once a Saxon church on the site.
