Crossley William Crosby Barlow was born on 24 March 1863 in Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire, the son of the Swedenborgian minister William Crosby. His schooling was at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh, Scotland, then Edinburgh University. He continued his studies at Peterhouse, Cambridge, becoming sixth Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos in 1886. G H Bryan was fifth Wrangler in the same examinations. Barlow, like Bryan, was 1st Class in Part II of the tripos in the following year. He became a tutor at the University Correspondence College in London.
