I lived in Bateman Street from October 1988 to June 1989, along with housemates Kate, Stella, Adrian, Steve, Danny, Richard and Simon. Number 19, like many houses in the road, was student accommodation; we were all at CCAT – Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology, which changed its name to Anglia Higher Education College in my last term there (not Anglia College of Higher Education, as those initials didn’t really work!). Five of us were doing English literature, one a joint-honours degree with Eng lit, one geography, and one a foundation course (although I can’t remember which subject).
Rooms were rented on an individual basis through the Accommodation Office at college, with some areas being communal. The house’s owner lived next door at number 18 and my housemates said that he’d sometimes come in to check up on the property through an adjoining door in an upstairs cupboard, although I never saw him myself!
