In 2024 VP sent us this note:
My grandparents worked at Thorndyke for the Mitchells for many years. My grandfather was a gardener and my grandmother worked in the house. They were very kind employers. They encouraged my grandad to bring garden produce to us: this was at a time after the war when times were hard. They suggested that my sister and I could stay at Thorndyke often when my grandparents were caretaking. It was wonderful for us in such a beautiful big house, allowed to read their children’s books and play with their toys, always respectfully, to explore the garden and breathe the wonderful apple smell in the garden store. Prof Mitchell saved my grandad’s life by recognising in time that he had lung cancer. I have wonderful memories of Thorndyke.
