Listed Building
This was the former toll house at the junction of Somersham and Needingworth roads. The round form enable the tollgate keeper to see in all directions. It was called Republic Cottage after it was accidentally left out of any parish c.1900 which enabled its owner to avoid rates.
The cottage was demolished in 1965. At the time the obelisk was discovered, originally erected by the turnpike trust.
