The Rouses’ son, Michael Henry, was born in 1940. His reminiscences are recorded in The Way We Remember It by Ann Powell and Michael Rouse. He described the community his parents moved into in 1936. Lynton Drive was a new community. There were the Edwards, the Dunnells, ourselves, the Wrights, the Needhams, the Lanes, the McCallums, the Foulgers among the first ‘settlers’ on our side of the road … We weren’t however destined to stay there long. War having been declared, the decision had already been taken, especially as my father was waiting to go into the RAF, that we would move to my mother’s family house, ‘Roswell’ on Prickwillow Road. And that would include Kay, our evacuee in her twenties, from London.
