Brickyard, Boxworth

History of brickyard

Boxworth OS 1886

Eileen Fenn’s reminiscences are in Memory Lane (2004) Swavesey History Society. In 1920 her parents were married in Swavesey – George Frederick Holmes, 27, and Grace Beatrice Brooks, 18. They made their home in the house that was part of a working brickyard 25 years previously. Eileen was born in 1924.

When she was 5 she attended Boxworth school. They would walk across the fields to the school, four times a day as they would come home for lunch except when the the fields were wet in the winter.

When she left school she started work as a housemaid for Bessie Day and her brother Cyril in Church Farmhouse. She was paid 5s a week.
