Roman finds have been made in this area since the 1890s demonstrating that Early Roman settlement extended well beyond the lines of the defences nearby. Excavations took place here in 2021 and are reported in:

The report discusses evidence that by the 2nd century there was a civil settlement of timber and thatch houses around the crossroads of the Colchester-Godmanchester Via Devana and Akeman Street. There is also now evidence that there was a ‘lower town’ south of the river crossing along the Colchester road. Although Roman masonry finds in Cambridge are limited, there is evidence of a street grid.
