In 2024 DP sent us the following note about Ion Keith-Falconer who lived in a set of room at this address until his marriage in 1884.
Ion was an accomplished athlete, the Champion Cyclist of Great Britain and Lord Almoner’s Professor of Arabic, Cambridge University. In particular, he undertook missionary work in Cambridge and in East London and encouraged by advice from Major-General Haig and the famous General Gordon (Khartoum), he answered the call to take the Gospel to the Arabs of South Arabia, to the then British colony of Aden. He chose Sheikh Othman as a base and established an influential hospital and a mission outreach but died prematurely, less than two months short of his 31st birthday. He was buried in Holkat Bay Cemetery, Aden with military honours. Although the torch of Ion’s life was extinguished early and his work brief, the inspiration of his character and example was deep and widespread. Thus, into history, Ion Keith-Falconer, son of the 8th Earl of Kintore, joins the ranks of those Scots who each in their own way, gave something to the world.
