Royal Commission Survey of Cambridge 1959: the site, part of Butcher’s Close, was let on a building lease to William Wilkins sen. (1751-1815) by Gonville and Caius College in c. 1800. The house, so far as it remains unaltered, does not entirely agree in shape with the house shown on the Inclosure award map of 1804, but in 1816 and 1836 it was advertised for sale and on the second occasion described as ‘erected about thirty years since by the late William Wilkins’ (Camb. Chronicle 27 May, 3 June 1836). ….. Newnham Cottage is an ‘Italian villa’ type of house that demonstrates a successful synthesis of rational values andante Neo-Classical style.
