History of 92 Gwydir Street

2-year-old Tom Brawn is described as a ‘nurse child’. Ten years earlier, when the family lived at 20 Russell Street, Harry Pateman was a ‘nurse child’, then using his birth name Harold Edwin Francis. Emma Hales was already living with the Patemans in 1871, aged 8.

Harry (Harold) had married and was now living at 12 Milford Street.
1897 (CDN 15.5.1897): ACCIDENT AT CAMBRIDGE RAILWAY STATION: On Friday the members of the Cambridge GER Ambulance Corps were afforded an opportunity of putting into practical use their skill in bringing first aid to the injured, for as the London and North Western train, to arrive at 6.15 pm was running into the terminus at Cambridge station, a GER porter, named Tom Pateman, who is only 18 years of age, and lives at 92 Gwydir-street, slipped between the platform and the moving train. The unfortunate man was immediately removed from the line and conveyed with all speed to with Addenbrooke’s Hospital by the ambulance team suffering from a compound fracture of the left thigh and dislocation of the hip, while his foot and ankle were severely crushed. An operation was performed after his admittance, and all is being done to prevent the amputation of the foot, but it is at present doubtful whether this will be successful. The injured man was progressing favourably this (Saturday) morning.

Richard Alderson, aged 24, plasterer, of 85, Gwydir-street, was charged with assaulting Ann Pointon, wife of Henry John Pointon, plasterer, of 92, Gwydir-street, and also with wilfully damaging a panel of the door of Pointon’s house to the extent of 12s. on August 1st.
