Michael Bowyer in Air Raid! pub 1986 recounts stories from the bombing raid in the early hours of 9th May 1941 on the railway and military vehicles parked in the streets off Hills Road.

At No 26 Marshall Road another incendiary landed on a wardrobe top, and again was promptly tackled. What amazed the residents of the street, where quite a number of bombs were burning, was that, as they were tackled in the broad moonlight, a warden was shouting to his fellow citizens to ‘put that light out!’
